Caral - Missionaries P-Day

Yesterday began as a long journey to the Ancient City of Caral. We left the house at 7 Am with three other missionaries couples, the Willis's, the Parkard's and the Speed's and arrived home around 8 PM. It was a four hour ride North along the Pan American Highway to reach the city which is 20 miles from the coast. The Valley to Caral was full of rich farming and agriculture land. Upon arriving at Caral it is a 1 1/2 mile walk to the 5000 year old ruins. There is a buggy ride the first half mile but outside of that we were on our feet all day. The tours was a three hour walk to see the site. Most of us did not take enough water and were dying of thirst when we arrived back at parking lot.

The runs are located in the Supa River Valley in an amazing agriculture production area. Remember, it is the middle of winter here and corn was in all stages of production. Some was just being planted and across the way in another field corn was being harvested. Peppers, cotton, strawberries, sugar cain, beans, flowers, and many other plants were all in bloom.  Caral had a population of about 5000 people and was some sort of a religious center.  It is believed that after about 1000 years a drought ended the productivity of the rich river valley and people moved on.
