PERU MEDICINE

When we first arrived in Cuzco (at 12000 Feet Elevation) in January Kris developed a cough and what she thought was some bronchitis. However it was the early stages of Pulmonary Edema.  Unfortunately for lack of early treatment it got out of hand and her health took a real down turn last week.  She developed an irregular heart beat, a low plus rate plus caused by the edema, and high blood pressure. The result were some serious medical problems and some serious treatment.  Pictured above and below she is in a Cuzco hospital pressure tank to take her back to sea level altitude.  Pulmonary Edema is not that uncommon in Cuzco and the Cuzco medical staff is well aware how to handle the problem.

Doctors even make house calls in Peru and oxygen support was delivered by the treating physician for several days to our apt.

However, the real solution is out of this high altitude and back to sea level.  Today (2-27) Kris will fly back to Lima for some well deserved R&R. I will remain in Cuzco for several weeks while she is  recovering.   Needless to say it has been a trying week for both of us.  But hopefully we/she is out of the woods.

  1. So glad you are going to be okay but looks scary in the photos. You must have felt like Jacque Coustoeu for awhile. LOL.
Get back to that lower altitude and take the beach and the sun for awhile. Your fellow Missionaries will cover for you.
Much love to you to get better and to Bob to not worry so much.

  2. How frightening! Give yourself time to heal before you get back to work. Take good care of yourselves, both of you!
