I love the Peruvian people. They are nice and friendly and very willing to help. Bob is talking Spanish to everyone. Duelo took us to the temple grounds where the family history center is. There are 4 computers and a volunteer staff. They are opening a new family history center in a month that will have 12 computers. The temple is very busy here. It does not even close on holidays. There is one English session a month but we can go and get headsets. The grounds are beautiful.
We have gone out to dinner three times this week. Duelo likes Chinese food. I must say it is very good. Went with the Sr Missionaries last night. Learned all the ins and outs of living in Peru. We learned how to shop, get a taxi and find a bus. I am a bit concerned about safety . Go tohttp://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_998.html My son Jim wrote that page regarding safety. We live in La Molina which is where the temple, missionary training center and our chapel are located. It is one of the safest areas for Peru. Most people live in gated communities or 12 feet fence and electric fence about that.
This has been a great day. We met with our Mission President, President Aridila today. He speaks very little English. All senior couples are under his direction. If assigned to the Lima Peru Administration Building, senior missionaries meet with him every couple of months. He is our ecclesiastical leader. We met a number of missionaries from Utah at his office. We will be traveling out of our mission to photograph records so we needed his permission.
The church furnishes our apartment and helps with dishes and bedding. Hope to get in our new apartment on Wednesday. There is no air conditioning or heating. The weather is like California but more humid. It is pretty hot today.
We got to listen to a meeting that was held yesterday in the Salt Lake Conference Center. The meeting was for employees, staff and senior missionaries assigned to the church office building. The church figured there were 800,180 hours of service by missionaries in the church office building in 2011.
The Managing Director of Family Search spoke. He said that in 1985 a major decision was made by the church, that members now needed to provide the names for temple work. Today the purpose of family search is to turn the hearts to our fathers.
After Elder Bednar’s talk at conference the indexing and names submitted to the temple increased by one-third. The Spirit of Elijah is populating the earth. The public can now access New Family Search. Much of the information is not available to the public such as temple information but names, date and places are. Before the end of the year, Family Search and New Family Search will in be one program. It will be much easier to add information to New Family Search. Should happen before the end of the year.
The 1940 is going to be indexed by the LDS Church, Ancestry and other organizations. The church hopes it will be done by the end of 2012. It is a much anticipated census.
We have been got for 16 days now. We miss our family and friends. I am excited to photograph records next week. Bob is excited about riding the bus and talking with the Peruvian people. Our days will be long. We pick up the bus at 7 AM and get home at 6 Pm. Hope I have the energy to keep writing.
