Lima

Every few blocks Lima has a public buildings, a park, public squares with large statues or a major round-about intersection full of interesting statutes or water features. Every street seems to be named after a major historical figure with their statue near by.   There always seems to be some beautification project going on. The street in front of our apartment is undergoing a major work over. A park, traffic circle, new sidewalks with brick and tile are being added. Most every street has a large green space running down the middle full of Sago and King Palms.  Watering is still done by hand irrigated, using ditches and head gates. Since we are on the way to work at an early hour, the police must keep a close watch on people sleeping in the parks during the night.  I never see anyone sleeping in the early AM.  However, by noon people are sleeping all over the place.  Two days ago I watched a park being watered and several people never opened their eyes or moved.  There were lots of others watching, including several policewoman, and everyone was waiting to see how wet and how long it would take the sleepers to move.

The time is flying by and Monday is Friday before we turnaround.  Some of the novel situations we find are interesting.  Yesterday morning our bus pulled to the curb and a gush of humanity poured out. The other waiting passengers were pushing and shoving to get a place to stand and the door closed. In the confusion, Kris was sweated on the bus ahead of me.  Kris now on the bus and me on the curb. And the bus about to take off. I guess the Cobradoro saw the panic on my face and opened the door and Kris jumped off. Someone ask me how Sister Bloomer was doing the other day and I said, "Fine." Their reply was, "I could tell she was a strong woman and would adapt."  We both wonder when the fun will end.
