OCTOBER CONFERENCE

Harold B Lee once said, "Conference is to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable."

I love this quote. I loved General Conference yesterday. As missionaries in the field, the announcement of the age change for Elders and Sisters is so exciting. The Elders in South America and parts of Europe have been going out at this age for a few years. For the sisters this is great. I believe we will see a large number of new missionaries in the next year. The First Presidency held a news conference after the first session of conference and said there are new missions that can be opened when these new missionaries start to add to the number of missionaries in the field.

When I see the situation for the world and the conflicts in our country I am convinced there is so much good in the world. When you see these missionaries and their great spirit and commitment, I want to shout to the world about our Savior and His great plan of happiness. I will still never forget being in the MTC and hearing the Elders and Sister sing "Called to Serve." Every adult in the church should experience this opportunity. This mission is a great blessing to Bob and I and our family. The blessings are great. Conference has renewed my testimony of this work.

My husband and I have been the Home Teacher to a beautiful lady in our ward named Judith. She found the church by finding conference on her television one day. She could not wait to find the missionaries on the following Monday. I can not help but wonder who is watching television or listening to the radio and will be seeking the missionaries tomorrow.

Bob and I were really moved by Elder Dallin H Oaks talk yesterday on children. Living in La Molina, Peru there are many wealthy people but we see the other side also. On our way home from the archives everyday there is a blind mother seated on the sidewalk with her can held out for the a few coins that people give her. She has two children about three and four who are dirty and beg for something to eat. The other day some people walked by who were eating sandwiches and the children were pulling on their clothes begging for the food. We try and bring them cookies but cookies do not seem adequate  after that talk. I am not sure of what we can do but we can feed them and maybe buy them some clothes.

Sometimes we see children that board the bus and sing and then go around with their can to collect money. Some of these children are five years old and their mother or fathers are not where to be seen. We see young children on the street between two and seven just wandering the street with not parents to be seen. Elder Oaks talk really brought these children to the for front of our minds. We have decided to do more.

There were so many more great talks. I felt the Lord speaking to me and renewing my testimony of the truthfulness of the gospel.

I must also add my testimony of Family History and Temple Work. I received an e-mail from my stake family history leader in Payson, Utah. The indexing has really dropped off since the 1940 census was completed. I pled with you to index. It is such a simple thing to do and it does not take a lot of time if you would just commit to a few hundred names a month. To the members of my stake, we are getting a temple in our back yard and the Lord is depending on us to do this work. If you are troubled or facing problems indexing will help fill the void. There are so many spirits on the other side you can serve. Service is so easy when we are indexing. Commit to this great program and I know God will bless you.  You do not need a calling to index. Pray before you index that you will help someone on the other side find the gospel. You can be like a missionary when you index. We are all called to index and this is a project that will continue through the millennium.
